And hypocrite of the day goes to...
David
Cameron either does not know what his government is doing, or he is a
hypocrite for saying he wants firms to do business in the UK.Using the
term "reshoring", the prime minister has trumpeted the value of
companies bringing business back. All very well, except his government
has just handed private firm Steria a contract knowing it plans to send
civil service work overseas.
This
'shared services' work includes handling sensitive personnel and
payroll information for a range of government departments. The Ministry of Justice has announced it plans to follow suit. We raised our concerns when plans were announced in September and the Cabinet Office refused to rule out offshoring.
We called for a rethink
in November when it emerged one cabinet minister had told Francis Maude
of his concerns. The MoJ case is interesting because when justice
secretary Chris Grayling was an employment minister, he "personally
intervened" to prevent Hewlett Packard offshoring jobs. He told parliament in November 2011 ministers had "indicated very clearly to our suppliers that we will not countenance seeing existing UK employment offshored". Read our press release reacting to Cameron today
